Some unconventional thoughts on our Fuel policy
While I was talking about the inflation and the impact of the fuel on everything, one of my friends shared some radical thoughts.
He asked me, “Why isn’t there a differential pricing on petrol? A lower middle class person riding a scooty or tvs 50 is paying the same Rs.55 per litre of petrol as the owner of a Mercedes /Skoda /BMW!! Surely the latter can afford a higher price of petrol!”
He also remarked “On one hand, the government is earning a lot on petroleum products by way of import, excise and sales tax but claiming to subsidise the users of these products? Why earn and then subsidise? In fact, why should they even subsidize these products?”
Our Public Distribution System aims at making essential food items available at an affordable price to the economically weaker sections of the society. The Government can do well to think on these lines for the petroleum products. In fact, it would be just an extension because kerosene is currently sold through PDS outlets only.
Will the concerned people think?
